Loss of Volume
Why has my face lost volume, and which areas may be involved?
Loss of facial volume is one of the most significant contributors to an aged appearance — causing hollowness, deflation and a gradual descent of facial features. At our doctor-led clinic in Shoreditch, London, Volt Cartel offers dermal fillers…
What Causes Loss of Facial Volume?
Types of Facial Volume Loss
Periorbital Hollowing
One of the earliest and most visible signs of volume loss. It creates a shadow or groove beneath the lower eyelid, making the face appear tired, hollow or aged even after good sleep.Cheek Flattening
Loss of cheek projection creates a flatter, deflated mid-face. This can contribute to deeper nasolabial folds, reduced facial support and early jowl formation.Temple Hollowing
Fat atrophy in the temporal region creates a hollowed appearance at the sides of the forehead. This can make the face appear more skeletal or older than it feels.Lip and Perioral Volume Loss
Thinning of the lips, reduced border definition and increased fine lines around the mouth can all occur as volume and collagen decline in the perioral area.Jawline and Chin Deflation
Loss of lower-face volume can contribute to jowl formation, reduced jaw definition, chin flattening and a less structured lower third of the face.Diffuse Facial Deflation
Generalised volume loss across several facial compartments can create an overall gaunt, tired or aged appearance. This usually benefits from a comprehensive, phased plan. Why Choose Volt Cartel for Volume Restoration in London?
Volume loss affects each patient differently depending on facial structure, rate of fat and bone resorption, and where the loss has been most significant. Our doctors perform detailed facial mapping — evaluating cheek projection, midface flatness, temporal hollowing, and lower face definition — before placing a single drop of filler.
We use hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for immediate volume restoration, selected by viscosity and projection according to the depth and area treated. Polynucleotides and Profhilo are used alongside or as a gentler first step in younger patients — stimulating the skin's own collagen and HA production rather than replacing volume with product.
True volume restoration often addresses multiple areas in one session — cheek filler to restore midface projection, chin or jawline filler to re-establish lower face definition, and skin boosters to improve skin quality. We plan this as a facial anatomy exercise, not a feature-by-feature treatment menu.
There is a natural ceiling to what filler can achieve in patients with significant bone resorption or severe soft tissue deflation. We'll tell you honestly if the improvement would be modest relative to your expectations — and discuss whether a surgical consultation would better serve the outcome you're looking for.

What to Expect From Volume Restoration Treatment
Volume restoration begins with a three-dimensional facial assessment with one of our doctors, who will evaluate the distribution of volume loss across the cheeks, temples, jawline, lips, and under-eye area. We use anatomical landmarks and proportional principles to plan a natural-looking result.
Dermal filler results are immediately visible after treatment. You may experience mild swelling and bruising for three to five days — especially in areas such as the lips and tear troughs — after which the final result settles. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
Results typically last six to eighteen months depending on the filler used and the area treated. Some structural fillers placed deep in the cheeks or jawline can last up to two years. We always start conservatively and review at two weeks, offering a top-up if desired.
Sources and review basis
Perceived facial volume loss can reflect changes in skin, fat compartments, soft tissue and deeper facial structure. The cited anatomical review supports a three-dimensional assessment rather than assuming that one product or procedure is appropriate for every face.
Treatments that may be considered
These are relevant routes, not recommendations. Suitability depends on assessment, medical history and the specific cause of the concern.
Questions people ask
How quickly will I see results from volume restoration treatment?
This depends on the treatment used. Polynucleotides and biostimulating treatments work progressively, with improvements often developing over several weeks. Energy-based treatments also improve gradually as collagen remodels.
How do I know which areas need treating?
Your consultation includes an assessment of facial structure, skin quality and volume distribution. We identify the areas contributing most to tiredness, hollowing or deflation before recommending a plan.
Is there downtime?
Downtime varies by treatment. Injectable treatments may cause mild swelling or bruising. Energy-based treatments may cause redness, warmth or temporary sensitivity. Your clinician will explain expected downtime before treatment.
How long do results last?
Results vary depending on the treatment, your age, skin quality, metabolism and lifestyle. Regenerative and collagen-stimulating treatments usually benefit from a course and periodic maintenance.
How much do dermal fillers for volume loss cost at Volt Cartel?
Dermal filler treatment starts from £350 per syringe at Volt Cartel. Most patients require one to three syringes depending on the degree of volume loss and areas treated. Full treatment costs are confirmed during consultation, and we never upsell or over-treat — only the volume you need for a natural result.
What causes facial volume loss?
Volume loss is a natural part of ageing — from our mid-twenties, we lose approximately 1cc of facial fat per decade. This accelerates in the forties and fifties, causing the cheeks to flatten, the temples to hollow, and the jawline to soften. Weight loss, certain medications, and lifestyle factors can accelerate this process.
Is facial filler safe, and what are the risks?
Dermal filler, when administered by an experienced doctor, is a very safe treatment. Risks include temporary bruising and swelling, lumpiness, and in rare cases, vascular complications. At Volt Cartel, all filler treatments are performed by qualified medical doctors with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, and we carry hyaluronidase for emergency dissolution.
Can filler make me look younger or just different?
When performed with a natural result in mind, filler restores a more youthful version of your existing features — it should not fundamentally change how you look. The goal is to replace lost volume in a way that appears effortless and anatomically appropriate, not to add volume where it never existed.
