Redness or Rosacea
What could be causing persistent facial redness or rosacea-like symptoms?
Redness and rosacea affect millions of people, causing persistent flushing, visible broken capillaries and chronic facial redness that can be difficult to manage with skincare alone. At our doctor-led clinic in Shoreditch, London, Volt Cartel offers advanced treatments…
What Causes Redness and Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition involving a combination of vascular dysregulation, immune system dysfunction and skin barrier impairment. Blood vessels within the skin become over-reactive, dilating more easily and remaining dilated for longer periods, resulting in persistent redness and flushing.
Research also suggests that Demodex mites, naturally occurring microscopic organisms found on human skin, may contribute to inflammation in susceptible individuals. Increased Demodex density is commonly seen in rosacea patients and is believed to play a role in triggering inflammatory responses.
Facial redness can also occur independently of rosacea. UV damage, broken capillaries, environmental exposure, ageing, hormonal changes and repeated flushing episodes can all contribute to persistent redness and visible thread veins.
Types of Redness and Rosacea
Different types of redness require different treatment approaches. Identifying the underlying cause allows us to create the most effective treatment plan.
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea
Persistent facial redness, flushing and visible capillaries. This is the most common form of rosacea and often responds exceptionally well to vascular IPL treatment.
Papulopustular Rosacea
Redness accompanied by acne-like spots and pustules. Although it resembles acne, it requires a different treatment approach focused on inflammation and vascular control.
Phymatous Rosacea
Skin thickening and enlargement, most commonly affecting the nose. More common in men and may require more advanced treatment approaches.
Ocular Rosacea
Affects the eyes, causing irritation, dryness, redness and sensitivity. Often occurs alongside facial rosacea and may require ophthalmological support.
Broken Capillaries
Visible thread veins and dilated blood vessels commonly seen on the nose, cheeks and chin. Often caused by sun damage, ageing, genetics or repeated flushing.
Sensitive or Reactive Redness
Diffuse redness caused by a compromised skin barrier, environmental triggers or skin sensitivity. Often benefits from both vascular treatment and skin barrier support.
Why Choose Volt Cartel for Redness and Rosacea Treatment in London?
Rosacea has four distinct subtypes — erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular — each requiring a different approach. Persistent redness can also result from couperose (broken capillaries), contact dermatitis, or sensitive skin with a compromised barrier. Our doctors assess the exact presentation before any treatment is recommended.
Lumecca IPL targets the haemoglobin in dilated vessels, selectively reducing redness and telangiectasia — a well-established device treatment for the vascular component of rosacea. Skin boosters improve barrier function, which reduces the reactivity that drives flushing in many rosacea patients.
IPL is effective for erythematotelangiectatic rosacea but does not address the inflammatory or papulopustular subtypes, which may require concurrent medical management. We'll tell you if a dermatology referral for topical or oral medication would be a necessary adjunct to our treatment at Volt Cartel.
Rosacea management is long-term. Treatment clears the existing visible vessels, but the underlying condition requires ongoing management and sun protection. We design treatment protocols with maintenance in mind, not just initial clearance.

What to Expect From Redness and Rosacea Treatment
Rosacea treatment begins with a doctor-led assessment to classify your rosacea subtype — whether it is primarily erythematotelangiectatic (redness and flushing), papulopustular (acne-like), or phymatous (skin thickening). The treatment approach varies significantly depending on your subtype.
Lumecca IPL is particularly effective for vascular redness, broken capillaries, and flushing-associated rosacea. After treatment, you may experience increased redness for 24 to 48 hours, after which the treated area settles and redness progressively reduces over one to two weeks. A course of three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is typically recommended.
Alongside clinical treatment, we provide guidance on rosacea triggers — including heat, alcohol, spicy foods, and certain skincare ingredients — to help you manage flare-ups between sessions and protect your results long-term.
Sources and review basis
Persistent facial redness can have more than one cause. NHS guidance explains common rosacea features, triggers, treatment routes and eye symptoms that need urgent assessment; an aesthetics page cannot diagnose rosacea or replace GP or dermatology care.
Treatments that may be considered
These are relevant routes, not recommendations. Suitability depends on assessment, medical history and the specific cause of the concern.
Questions people ask
Can rosacea be cured permanently?
Rosacea cannot currently be cured, but its visible signs and symptoms can often be managed extremely effectively with the right treatment plan and trigger management.
How effective is Lumecca IPL for rosacea?
Lumecca IPL is considered a commonly used option for vascular rosacea, flushing and broken capillaries, often producing a noticeable improvement after a course of treatment.
How many IPL sessions will I need?
Most patients benefit from a course of 2–4 sessions, although treatment recommendations depend on the severity of redness and the presence of visible blood vessels.
Can rosacea worsen over time?
Yes. Without management, rosacea can progress from intermittent flushing to persistent redness, visible capillaries and more advanced subtypes.
How much does rosacea treatment cost at Volt Cartel?
Lumecca IPL for rosacea and redness starts from £300 per session at Volt Cartel. A course of three sessions is most commonly recommended, with package pricing available. All treatment costs are confirmed at consultation, and there is no obligation to proceed.
Is rosacea curable, or can it only be managed?
Rosacea is a chronic condition that cannot be permanently cured, but it can be effectively managed and significantly suppressed with the right combination of professional treatments, skincare, and lifestyle adjustments. Many patients achieve long periods of remission with appropriate care, during which rosacea is barely noticeable.
Can rosacea affect areas other than the face?
Rosacea most commonly affects the central face — cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. However, it can occasionally involve the neck, chest, and scalp. Ocular rosacea, which affects the eyes, is a separate manifestation that requires medical assessment and treatment by a specialist.
What skincare should I use if I have rosacea?
Patients with rosacea benefit from a simplified, gentle skincare routine: a fragrance-free cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser, and a mineral-based SPF 50 daily. Avoid acids, retinoids, and physical exfoliants during active flare-ups. Our doctors can recommend a personalised skincare protocol as part of your consultation.
